How To Find A Mentor To Learn Internet Marketing

Learning to be a good Internet marketer can be a daunting challenge filled with confusion and misinformation. At every turn there are distractions and differences of opinion on the best strategies and tactics.

Even getting started, the rookie online marketer is faced with the question of what business model to pursue. When I started nearly four years ago, I built eight niche sites and did blogging and I attempted to build a loyal following. The fact that I was pursuing eight niches at the same time should give you a hint as to how successful I was (I failed).

I also tried affiliate marketing and writing and selling my own ebooks. There were so many things I’d read and heard about how to market online and everyone was saying, “Do this, not that, if you want to make money on the Internet.”

It was frustrating and confusing and I don’t know why I chose to rely solely on articles and videos on the Internet to guide me. The thought never occurred to me to go out and find an Internet marketing mentor.

Even if I had thought of it, where would I find such a mentor? Since I didn’t go to industry events and didn’t know anyone who was making money online, I had no idea where to meet these experts. Until one day, earlier this year I stumbled upon an article that talked about a big-time blogger and marketer named John Chow.

I saw a video that said he was in Irvine, about 30 minutes away, and there was a shot of a Dot Com Lifestyle Meetup group that he hosted. I made it a point to get to the Meetup group and met John Chow and the rest of the Dot Com Lifestyle crew. All these people are experts in their own fields and John Chow and Oscar Gonzales are geniuses.

When I studied music I sought out the best guitar teacher I could find Norman Merten, and the best songwriting teacher, Dr. George Shaw from Long Beach City College. I made much more rapid progress under their instruction. Why did I not seek out a real life mentor/teacher relationship in Internet marketing? Because I didn’t think it was possible.

I know differently now, and if I were just starting out again, the first thing I’d do would be to find a mentor. Some questions just can’t be answered by doing a Google search or watching video tutorials. For example, how do you search for an answer to a questions like this:

“How do I balance writing blog posts for my personally branded business blog that I want to build a loyal following for, when I also want to promote my products and opportunities? Is there a way to do this and not alienate or offend my audience?”

I asked this exact question and got the answer I needed. Yesterday I had a question about which PPV networks I should use that had a lower initial buy in than Lead Impact and Traffic Vance and John gave me the answer (Direct CPV). He also pencilled out his PPV strategies and told me how I should pursue it.

Having a good mentor is also good for your marketing. John lets me do short video comments where I can promote my website. He posts these on his website which gets hundreds of thousands of visitors a month.

I feel that having John Chow as my mentor has accelerated my learning and helped me to focus on what’s truly important in becoming an effective marketer. One thing I’ve learned is that John NEVER goes anywhere without a camera and is constantly looking for ways to produce new content in the form of photos and videos.

If you want to see how big John Chow is in the Internet marketing world, go meet him at the Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas. You’ll see the red carpets roll out and the VIP treatment he gets everywhere he goes. He’s treated like a rock star.

Have you found your Internet marketing mentor yet? You may be surprised how easy it is if you start searching and make an effort. Start with Meetup groups in your area related to tech and ask around. You never know until you try.

The most important thing I learned from John is that the best business model for a new Internet marketer is the licensing model. He explains everything in our co-branded ebook.

John is allowing me to “borrow” his authority by having a picture of us in it and allowing me to write the foreward. My conversions have gone way up since borrowing John’s authority.
