What It Takes To Succeed At Internet Marketing

I downloaded a 39 page ebook by Jonathan Budd called, “State of the Internet Address.” It’s the best single piece of content I’ve read on what it takes to become a successful Internet marketer.

Here’s my favorite quote from the ebook:

“Expect you will have to do WHATEVER it takes, with no clue what that is or how long it will be, but that you just HAVE TO DO IT and can NEVER STOP… if you’re ever to get the job done.”

I think we all understand the first part, “Do whatever it takes.” I think we all know that we can never stop if we want to assure our success. It’s the middle part that was enlightening: “with no clue what that is or how long it will be, but you just HAVE TO DO IT.”

If you’re not in the Internet marketing business, you might be thinking, “Wow, really? Is that how it is?” If you’re in the business, you might be saying, “Wow, really? I thought it was just me.” That was my exact reaction.

The hardest part about the whole business of making a living online is that it’s not always clear exactly what we should be doing. It’s not like a regular job where you know what tasks you need to perform to get the job done.

It’s not like studying to be a doctor where you know what classes you have to take and what books you need to study. It’s not like any of the traditional careers and fields of study.

I think it’s more like this: You decide you want to learn how to earn some income online and you start investigating ways to do it. I spent hours, then days, then months, researching ways to make money on the Internet.

Three years ago, I built eight websites, wrote ebooks, and tried affiliate marketing, never knowing if I was doing the right things in the right ways. In fact most of the time, I had no idea what I was doing. Even after buying all the courses and watching all the tutorials, most of the time I had no clue if I was doing it right.

Earlier this year, I met a guy who is a true Internet marketing legend–I’m talking full guru status, who was willing to help me and mentor me. His name is John Chow and you’ve probably heard of him.

He showed me how to build landing pages that converted well, how to write an email follow up series that caused people to hit the buy button, and how to do the marketing I needed to do to drive traffic.

I was extremely fortunate to have met him and he’s changed my whole game. But you know what? Much of the time I’m still not sure what I’m doing because I’m learning new marketing strategies that he doesn’t have to do.

John has a huge following of 200K loyal readers. So when John wants to market something, he sends an email to his list and puts a banner on his blog. He’s given me great tips and advice during our Saturday training sessions, but much of what I do is trial and error and testing new strategies.

So I hear Jonathan Budd’s words in my head when I feel lost and like I’m unsure of what I’m doing and I know it’s natural and part of the process. It’s no big deal, and I just keep taking action and moving forward.
